The Centre for Independent Living in Toronto is looking for an Intake and Resource Person to work with the Self-Managed Attendant Services; Direct Funding Program. This is a full-time position and will require someone with imagination who is comfortable working in a team environment. You will assist applicants to complete their applications, input application information and provide information to applicants, and participants about the Program, employment legislation, budget information as well as general information about other disability-related subjects. As an individual who uses attendant services, you are familiar with the variety of personnel issues that can come up when dealing with attendants. This position requires someone with excellent communication skills who is familiar with MS Word and Excel; experience in MS Access is an asset. Knowledge of the Employment Standards Act, payroll and related financial issues would also be beneficial in this role since you will be speaking to participants about a variety of employment, budgeting and financial matters. CILT is an equal opportunity employer so individuals with disabilities, especially those who use attendant services, are encouraged to apply. Disability Tax Credit - Important Consultation Process

Important News!!!! The Canada Revenue Agency is actively seeking consultations regarding the DTC - it's time to Voice your Concerns!

Many of you are probably already aware that (the Federal) government is in the process of establishing regulations that will set the maximum fees for completing a Disability Tax Credit application, through the Disability Tax Credit Promoter's Restriction Act (DTCPRA). I felt that I needed to share this information with you in the event that you were not already made aware of this important consultation process, which is now in effect. As of November 2014, Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) will be seeking the views of Canadians with disabilities and their supporting persons, promoters, tax professionals, qualified practitioners and members from the general public. This feedback will help the CRA in setting the maximum fees allowable under the Act, as well as to identify individuals who may be exempt from the Act's reporting requirements. CRA is also looking for suggestions on how to simplify the DTC process and clarify the steps Canadians need to take to apply for the credit. Many of you may be already aware that people with disabilities are using the services of businesses which charge astronomical amounts (flat rate fees + 30-40% of benefits) to assist with their DTC application. Your participation and feedback are important to CRA and will be essential in helping protect people with disabilities from paying excessive fees for assistance with a DTC request as well as improve the DTC process. This is why I am urging everyone to take the time to participate through the available options below. Position type: Part-time; Average of 28 hours per week

Contract ends: March 31, 2015

Reports to: Aging With a Disability Working Group

Scope of Position:

To lead the research project to conduct 20 peer-led focus groups and to develop a research paper for a multi-disciplinary working group. This Ontario Trillium Foundation funded initiative has numerous deliverables with strict timelines.

Key Responsibilities:

• Outreach to and build relationships with disability focused community organizations in Toronto to facilitate focus group sessions.
• Recruit and train 4 focus group peer facilitators.
• Recruit 200 focus group participants and educate them on the goals and activities of the project.
• Coordinate activities of the project with the Trillium Research Advisory Committee (TRAC).
• Responsible for the stewardship of the research project.
• Administrative duties as required.
• Ensure that data collected from focus groups is contained safely and confidentially.
• Responsible for the development of a final research report based on the findings within the focus groups.
• Works with the members of TRAC to operationalize the recommendations in the research paper.

Qualifications:

• A minimum of one year experience.
• Post secondary education in social/health sciences or equivalent with proven research experience.
• Demonstrated written and communications skills.
• Understanding
• of disability issues within an intersectional framework that takes into account race, gender, sexual orientation, age and economic status.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment with limited supervision.
• Experience with Microsoft Office, particularly with Access and creating database systems
• Must be able to travel across the GTA and possibly work between two different locations.
• Proven record of working within limited timeframes.

Focus Group for Women with Disabilities

Springtide Resources and SPIN (Strength-Based Parenting Initiative) will be running focus groups for women with disabilities women who have parented, are parenting and are considering parenting.

Do you identify as a woman with a disability that has experienced an unhealthy living situation?

Are you thinking about parenting?

Have your past experiences around an unhealthy living situation made you feel anxious about starting your own family?

Are you concerned about seeking support around an unhealthy living situation because of the myths and stereotypes that exist for mothers with disabilities?

The Municipal Licensing and Standards Committee of the City of Toronto has undertaken a review of the taxicab industry.

Support Person Travels for Free on TTC

There is an application for a TTC Support Person Assistance Card available on the TTC website.

There is an application for a TTC Support Person Assistance Card available on the TTC website.

As of January 1, 2014, a support person travelling with a person with a disability on the TTC will not be required to pay an extra fare.

Note: When bringing a support person on the TTC, you may be asked to show a printout of the link below.

The Dr. E. Bruce Hendrick Scholarship Program

This scholarship was named in honour of Dr. E. Bruce Hendrick as a tribute to his support and service to Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Association of Ontario members.

This scholarship was named in honour of Dr. E. Bruce Hendrick as a tribute to his dedication, on-going support and outstanding service to Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus Association of Ontario members.

The Dr. E. Bruce Hendrick Scholarship Program was established in 1990 and is supported and directed by the SB&HAO.

The 2014 Application Deadline is Wednesday, April 30.

The Dr E. Bruce Hendrick Scholarship Program was established:

• to encourage and support students with spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus to develop independence
• responsibility for their own future educational directions
• to assist students to pursue higher education with the ultimate goal of obtaining a degree or graduate certificate or diploma.

Safe Inclusive Toronto Streets (SITS) Project

The Safe Inclusive Toronto Streets (SITS) project will have a dual purpose of making people with disabilities feel safer on city streets by providing self-defence tools and information about how to report navigational hazards as they occur.

The Safe Inclusive Toronto Streets (SITS) project will have a dual purpose of making people with disabilities feel safer on city streets by providing self-defense tools and information about how to appropriately report navigational hazards as they occur.

This project is a 1 year community based cross disability partnership starting in the Fall 2013 with the Centre for Independent Living in Toronto (CILT) as the lead.

This CILT project is funded by City of Toronto’s Community Safety Investment (CSI) fund.
